If you or your workforce wear RPE, whether they are FFP disposables, half face or full face respirators, then under current legislation they need to be face fit tested to ensure the wearer is fully protected from airborne contaminants (HSE Guidance Note: 282/28).

In addition to every face fit test, we provide assistance and training on how to correctly maintain and don the RPE, thus ensuring your workforce achieve the best protection possible.

We carry a range of RPE from different manufacturers ensuring we have something suitable for each individual.

Why perform a fit test?

Face Fit Testing is a method used for checking that a tight fitting face piece matches the person’s facial features and seals adequately to the wearer's face. An inadequate fit will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer and increase their risk of developing respiratory diseases.

Quantitative vs Qualitative Testing

At Harrisons of Hull we care about you and your employees which is why we consider the quantitative method of face fit testing to be superior to the qualitative method. Using the latest technology we can accurately determine, by way of fit factor, the improvement in air quality inside of the delegates RPE.

The PortaCount works by measuring the concentration of microscopic dust particles in the ambient air and then measuring the concentration of those dust particles that leak into the respirator. As stated in HSE OC 282/28, the ratio of these two concentrations is called the fit factor. A quantitative fit test is not affected by the person's sense of smell, taste or sensitivity to irritant chemicals.

Qualitative fit testing is still considered an acceptable way of carrying out face fit testing. Wearing a hood the seal of the mask to the delegate’s face is tested by spraying in a bitrex solution. If the bitrex can be tasted then the mask does not fit, if the bitrex is not tasted then the mask is considered to fit adequately. The testing can be carried out by one of our technicians or we can train a member of your organisation to administer the test. For training on the qualitative testing kits please speak to a member of our team.

"I approached Harrisons of Hull as 14 of my employees needed masks for a contract in the city centre. I initially dealt with Richard, who was happy to fit the job in around times to suit myself and my team.

On the day, we were all face fit tested by Andrew who was friendly yet professional in his manner. The pricing was extremely competitive and I am confident that my employees now have a mask that fits their face properly, which also gives me peace of mind. I would not hesitate to give Harrisons of Hull repeat custom or recommend them to others. "
